Coffee and Cinnamon French Toast with Whipped Cream surrounded by coffee, hazelnuts and sliced bananas

Mornings have always been a time for Philip and me to connect. Writing in our 5 Minute Journals, enjoying a small breakfast and sipping coffee was our standard routine before heading out the door for work. Over the past few months, nothing much has changed. We’ve introduced morning walks, still write what we’re grateful for and have extended our coffee routine with Nespresso Vertuo Next, and have even started treating ourselves to the weekend breakfast experience during the week!

A true gourmet French toast, our version is flavoured with Nespresso’s premium coffee and rich crema, and cinnamon. It’s then fried to golden perfection and topped with homemade whipped cream, sliced bananas, and crushed hazelnuts — don't hold the syrup. How are you celebrating your morning routine?

How to Make Coffee and Cinnamon French Toast with Whipped Cream, Bananas and Hazelnuts

Ingredients to make coffee and cinnamon french toast

Ingredients you'll need for our Coffee and Cinnamon French Toast

    • 4 eggs
    • ½ cup heavy cream
    • ½ cup coffee, room temperature
    • ¼ cup white sugar
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 8 slices thick-cut bread
    • salted butter
    • whipped cream, for serving
    • banana slices, for serving
    • chopped hazelnuts, for serving

Step 1 | Make the Batter

In a medium or large shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream, coffee, sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and a pinch of salt.

Step 2 | Soak the Bread in the French Toast Batter

One slice at a time, soak the bread in the eggs for about 20 to 30 seconds per side. Set them aside on a plate or wire rack while repeating with remaining bread.

Step 3 | How to Cook French Toast

Place a heavy skillet on medium heat. Melt 2 to 3 teaspoons of butter in the pan and fry one or two pieces of the french toast until golden brown, about 3 minutes per side. Set cooked french toast aside in a warm oven or microwave while cooking the rest.

Step 4 | How to Serve our French Toast

Whether you like your french toast simple with just some maple syrup or loaded to the nines, it's up to you how to serve it. With this gourmet french toast, we like a dollop of whipped cream, sliced bananas, a drizzle of maple syrup, and a dusting of crushed hazelnuts.
