Philip here from Chef Sous Chef, and if you haven’t guessed it already, I’m the Chef. My love for food first started with my Saturday morning trips to the farmer’s market with my Dad. I have vivid memories of walking into the giant warehouse full of vendors; walking by the fresh juice stands, produce vendors and by far my favourite, the fishmongers, who would throw their morning catch across the booths to customers.
After the market, my Dad would take my four brothers and my sister (yes, there’s that many of us) to the butcher for deli meat. Every Saturday, we’d look forward to sitting around the big kitchen table with cheese, deli meats and buns and making our own sub sandwiches. Looking back, getting children to be part of making their own food and creation is great way to get involved and appreciate homemade meals. I believe that healthy food should be more accessible to children and the importance of nutrition should be taught as a basic skill. Every Wednesday, I spend my time with FoodShare, a Toronto based non-profit organization that works with communities and schools to deliver healthy food and food education. This role connects my passion to my beliefs, our blog to a cause, and continues to inspire the missions we value.
In the summer of 2010, I spent 8 weeks backpacking my way through London, Dublin, Portugal, Croatia and France, then settled in Florence, Italy for 4 weeks. It was this trip that ignited my passion for food.I learned quickly that the most beautiful and delicious meals were those made with the least amount of ingredients but of the highest quality. Beautiful food does not need to be difficult to make; the beauty lies within its simplicity.
When I’m not cooking, a few of my other passions include biking, camping, smoking cigars, or unwinding with the Toronto Raptors, and when I’m not doing these things I sell real estate.I have been a realtor in Toronto since 2011 and currently am a real estate broker at PSR. To me, there is nothing better than watching a family grow in their new home and being part of the process in seeing them achieve their goals. I value the trust that comes with assisting clients with the largest and most emotional investment of their lives, and take pride in making their purchases less of a house and more of a home.
